Notes on the Car

Ownership

I acquired the car in February 2002 with 5,913 miles and have owned it since then. CARFAX shows three owners because when I moved from Pennsylvania to Florida, it was recorded as an ownership change. There was no change in ownership; I have owned the car since 2002.

Convertible Top

The convertible top is original and is in exceptional condition. It spent most of its life down, either because I was driving with the top down or because the factory hardtop was installed. The soft top was also cleaned and treated twice each year. There is a picture below showing how water beads on the top!

For those familiar with E46 convertible tops, there are three common problem areas:

  1. Convertible-top latch mechanisms: The latch assemblies contain plastic components that are known to break. Mine have been replaced and bulletproofed by adding epoxy over the plastic components along with additional bolts. See Pictures Here

  2. Convertible-top motor cover: The original plastic cover over the top motor beneath the rear seat is prone to breaking. Mine has been replaced with a metal one.

  3. Convertible-top batwing trim pieces: The plastic batwing pieces at the rear interior, to which the top/headliner material attaches, are broken. Replacement parts are included with sale.

Interior & Audio

The factory center armrest was replaced with a custom, shorter armrest and the cupholders centers were removed to accommodate two large cups. Original center armrest is included. If you want to go back to original cupholders you can pick them up for around $30.

The rear-seat pass-through was replaced with an 8-inch subwoofer concealed behind a black cloth cover. The original cover is included.

All of the speakers have been replaced. The factory stereo was replaced with a modern unit designed to retain the appearance of the original stereo while adding Apple CarPlay, hands-free calling and a backup camera. The original factory stereo and CD changer are included.

Lighting

The rear light assemblies have been replaced with LED units. The original rear light assemblies are included with the car.

Also Included

  1. Full car cover

  2. Full Cockpit Tonneau cover: Cloth cover that covers the interior when the convertible top is down and the car is parked. Pictures below.

  3. Rear windscreen

  4. Hardtop stand

  5. Escort mount and wiring (I am keeping the detector)

Known Flaws

  1. Cruise control is not working.

  2. Convertible-top batwings need to be replaced. Replacement parts are included.

  3. The passenger-seat occupancy sensor has been coded out.

  4. There is a small leak from the rear main seal. My mechanic estimated the repair at approximately $2,500 and recommended leaving it for the new owner to decide whether they want to address it.

  5. Ding low behind the driver's side door - Picture below. You can't see it most of the time, so I tried to get it to show as bad as it can.

  6. Some scrapes on the rims

  7. Hardtop has a couple paint chips and there a couple small other chips around the car
